All Used Up May & June 2017

All Used Up May & June 2017

I had empties in may but I kept forgetting to post them long enough that it’s now a combined post.

essence all about matt! oil control paper: These paper things are a must @ work when the weather is hot. I liked the paper but the packaging was a bit annoying so I repurchased the Catrice ones instead.

Batiste dry shampoo sweetie: The packaging is so cute with the little russian dolls. The smell confused me a bit because it smelled like pineapple to me and that didn’t really go with the look. Apparently it’s supposed to be raspberry, not pineapple. Okay. The scent lasted only ten minutes which is good because it would be annyoing to smell all day. The spray itself works well and fluffs my hair up nicely. Will repurchase but probably in a different scent.

Garnier Micellar Water: still a fav cleanser of mine, not too expensive and just works. I thought about getting the Bioderma one instead but it’s more expensive so I got another bottle of Garnier by now.

Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pure Body Lotion: I’ve already reviewed the perfume here. The body lotion smells nice, but is not a very good lotion overall. Does not give enough moisture and leaves me sticky at the same time. Would not buy in full size.

Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir body lotion: Oh yes I can see why this scent is popular. It’s fruity but also deep and resinous and the scent lingers for SO LONG on skin! This was also a much better lotion than the Issey one. Would still not purchase a full size of the body lotion but would certainly not say no to the perfume! Was that too many negatives in one sentence?

Dior Lip Glow: This was a LE coral version. I’m not sure if it’s still sold. Colorwise it ends up pink anyway so if I repurchased one it’d be the regular pink one. However, I like the Givenchy ones a tad better even if this was a good balm and pretty color.

Bioderma Sebium Global: This is a serum with a high amount of citric acid and some salicylic acid and zinc, so basically an all around product for when you’ve got acne. So far I always concentrated on BHA alone but I found it’s the combination of both AHA and BHA (plus niacinamide, more on that later) that really works. I guess the pores aren’t just clogged from sebum (BHA helps) but also dead skin cells (AHA helps) so from now on I’ll always use both.

List of ingredients for Bioderma Sebium Global. I went back to repurchase it – only to be told “we are not carrying Bioderma anymore, sorry”. WHA! So I got some Dermasence poduct instead. I could’ve bought the Bioderma at another place – but the one I usually shop at gives the best discount so for now no more Bioderma for me.

Olaz Total Effects Serum: Gel cream with lots of niacinamide. You can always count on Olaz/Olay to bring the niacinamide and I have found that this ingredient (in combination with the acids mentioned above) gives the best results for my skin. I bought this one here at TK Maxx. When I went to check the item at the drugstore I found that the name was similar but packaging and ingredients differed. Later I bought another one at TK Maxx, but it was again different from the others. So either they keep reformulating them or idk.

List of ingredients for Olaz Total Effects Serum.

The cream comes out gel-like but feels a tad oily on the skin, but that doesn’t last. I liked the results very much – I hope the new one can compare. The version I found at the drugstore contained lots of alcohol so I would not purchase that one. The ones without alcohol I’ll take.

I used this one at night after the Bioderma one. My new bottle has SPF 15 so I’m not yet sure if I’ll use it as a day cream or keep using it at night…

And the very last item, used up on the last day of June and therefore barely squeezing into the post: Colab Dry Shampoo Paradise. This is my first ever Colab dry shampoo. And it really does leave no visible residue. unlike every other dry shampoo I had before! It does leave the hair feeling a bit sticky, though. Sadly it did not work quite as well as Batiste when it came to making my hair fluffy and keeping it there.

However, guys, the scent is godly! (And I do mean godly, it smells like Estee Lauder’s Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche!) The scent is great but intense so it can battle with your perfume if you wear one. Also, the scent just lasts and lasts all day! Not sure if dry shampoo or hair perfume, really. You can tell Ruth Crilly loves a good scent, they did not skimp on the budget in this point. So on the one hand, Batiste works a bit better for me. On the other hand compared to Colab Batiste smells just so cheap. It’s a toss up, I’ll be repurchasing both brands.

Big recommendation for the smell!!!

And that was my empties for the last two months. I super miss the two face creams already in fact I am having a bad break out right now, boohoo.

essence Glossy Kiss: Cherry Kiss and Berry Kiss

essence Glossy Kiss: Cherry Kiss and Berry Kiss

essence-gloss

More products from last year’s advent calendar: essence glossy kiss. On the front the tube says lip balm, but on the back it says lip gloss. I guess it’s sort of both. It’s a gloss, but also completely non-sticky. It feels more like a nourishing oil, really.

essence-gloss1

It’s got the typical tube gloss opening.

essence-gloss2

Swatch of Cherry Kiss. It comes out bright red, but as you can see, sheers out into pretty much nothing. There is no shimmer.

essence-gloss3

Lip swatch of Cherry Kiss. The color mostly settles in lip lines.

essence-berry

And this is Berry Kiss.

essence-berry1

Swatch of Berry Kiss shows it’s Barbie pink with lots of shimmer, and the color also sheers out mightily.

essence-berry2

Lip swatch of Berry Kiss. It has less color to begin with, so nothing settles in lip lines. The shimmer is somewhat visible.

Despite the fact that both are barely visible on lips, they stain like crazy on everything your lips come in contact with – glasses, your skin, other people’s skin etc. I suddenly had pink fingers and no clue why until I remembered I was wearing this gloss and must have touched my lips without even noticing.

Lasting power was close to zero: Maybe half an hour, if even.

I think the biggest selling point of these must be the scent & taste, which is exactly like you would expect from the names: fake cherry candy and fake berry candy. The target group is probably young teenagers who I think might like this sort of thing?

All Used Up July 2016

All Used Up July 2016

While I didn’t blog a lot in July, I did manage to use up quite a few products:

IMG_4102

Elizabeth Arden Flawless Future Caplet Serum: As you can see, there are still capsules left in the bottom, but they were impossible to get out. The serum is colorless with white balls floating in it. When you pump them out, they combine into a shimmery white substance. There is a lot of mica in it and it is very visible in the face. Sadly, the mica has exactly the right size to settle in pores and enhance them.

From what I can tell, this serum is very moisturizing and enhances the effect of other products layered on top. So I used this and then put my BHA serum on top. I didn’t use this serum on its own. It didn’t have any adverse effects in my face, but I can’t say if it had any positive effects either. Due to the glitter I wouldn’t buy a full size. I prefer my shimmer to come in form of highlighters, where I can control where they go.

IMG_4009

Next up: Douglas Beauty System Sea Thalasso Shower Gel. I used to have a matching body lotion, but ran out much sooner. Despite the hints of Sea Thalasso in the name, this does not smell salty or anything. It smells heavenly of neroli. I love it, real good scent. I don’t even know if this is still being sold though. It often takes me so long to use things up because I switch around.

IMG_4008

List of ingredients.

IMG_4003

Biotherm Aquasource Cream: I’m pretty sure I had this before. It’s just a rich cream wth the nice fresh smell that Biotherm often uses. I don’t have the packaging with the ingredients anymore, sorry. The cream is nice, but nothing special.

IMG_3989

La Roche Posay Anthelios AC SPF 30: a mattifying sun protection for the face. Alcohol is fairly high in the list, so I would not buy a full size for myself. When I use alcohol on my skin and then go into the sun I get big angry red spots. The cream proteced well from sun rays, though. At least I didn’t get sunburn. The cream left a visible white cast on me.

IMG_3880

Douglas Naturals face cream day with argan oil: You can tell it’s a “natural” cream by the smell: typical essential oils smell. Nasty if you ask me. The cream was bad, it simply didn’t want to sink in or distribute evenly. I think I also broke out from it (it’s hard to say exactly, but I had been acne free for a long time until that point). Avoid, avoid!

IMG_3912

The Body Shop Honeymania lip balm: This is a huge pot of lip balm and I gotta admit, it went bad before I could use it up, so it had to go. Back when it was still good, it had a lovely smell of fake honey and a waxy texture that protected lips nicely.

IMG_3906

Lush Helping Hands: a hand cream with light texture that sunk it quickly – no waiting time until you can use your smart phone again. 🙂 For my dry hands it works in summer, but in winter I need something richer. I didn’t love the smell, but it wasn’t bad either.

IMG_3884

Two perfume samples: Simply Jil Sander – a favorite of mine, review here.

And Lolita Lempicka Eau de Parfum: Sadly there are many Lempickas with similar names. I think this is the usual one, with the light purple bottle. I like it quite a bit. It smelled of cherry candy and liquorice. It smelled a bit dusty and light at the same time, like a young girl wearing an old dress. Quirky. Sadly, as far as I can tell, Lempicka aren’t sold in stores in Austria anymore and online retailers only have a few leftovers of this particular perfume.

IMG_3876

Lee Stafford Poker Straight for Oily Roots Dry Shampoo: This is the white variant (I had to give away my brown colored one after I went blond, haha). I like this, it works well. The smell could be a bit less intense for me (since I prefer smelling of my chosen perfume and not of my hair products) but the scent itself is okay. I have already repurchased this.

IMG_3860

Louis Widmer 50+ Extra Sun Fluid: This is one of my favorite sun products. The protection factor is high, there is no alcohol in the formula and no perfume. It leaves a slight white cast on the skin, but not very bad. The texture is not mattifying, it left me with a glow. But personally, I like that. Mattifying products often make  my skin too dry. The texture is very runny. Biggest downside: only 100 ml of product and not very cheap. Haven’t repurchased so far, but I might because it’s really good. I also tried the SPF 30, but that one had alcohol in it and my skin reacted badly.

IMG_3863

List of ingredients.

And, that’s it. Quite a list for one month. 🙂

All Used Up April 2016

All Used Up April 2016

Ah, sorry for the little hiatus there. My schedule keeps being upset and I can’t create when I don’t have a few hours of spare time in one go. 😦 Anyway, here is what I used up the last month, quite a few items:

batiste blonde

Batiste Dry Shampoo light&blonde: this dry shampoo is colored. It comes out a muddy yellow. it totally works for my hair, but I’m not sure if it would work for a platinum blonde. You might end up with yellow patches! It does leave the scalp yellow, which is a bit annoying. The scent is vanilla, which is okay, but I’d highly prefer for hair products in general to be a lot less scented. They often compete with my perfume. But in general this is a good dry shampoo. It also creates volume, something I despereately need. The finish is duller than other dry shampoos might leave you, but I don’t care. Already repurchased.

batiste blonde2

Ingredients for Batiste Dry Shampoo.

IMG_3592

Clarins Daily Energizer Cleansing Gel: This is a case of not used up. I finally admitted to myself that foaming cleansers are really irritating for my skin. This particular product has a really nice smell, just like the matching cream, which I used up and reviewed before. But ultimately it’s not worth it. If you are the sort of person to use foaming cleaners you can find similar ones for less money.

IMG_3600

This is my second empty MAC Mineralize Compact Foundation. It works really well for me. I have not repurchased yet, but I might. I just wish they offered a lighter color than NC15. I think I am really NC13 now.

IMG_3648

Another handcream. I may be on a mission to try all the Balea ones… This is the Totes Meer handcream (dead sea salt). The texture is light and absorbs easily. The scent is light and unoffensive, a bit salty. Despite the light texture, it really helped keeping my skin moisturized. I have now purchased other hand creams that need to be used up, but I would totally repurchase this one. I just wish it came with SPF!

IMG_3650

Ingredients. Click to see full size.

IMG_3659

Absolute Douglas Endless lashes mini mascara: I will spare you the review because not only does this mascara not exist anymore, the whole brand has been discontinued at the end of 2015. I just took a pic of my fingers with the brush, because the brush is really super big. I kept on stabbing myself in the eye, or applying mascara to my brows on accident. 😐

IMG_3663

MAC brow pencil Lingering: the quality is absolutely top notch. The color is brown, something that works for many people. But I am naturally very ashy and found this a tad too red to repurchase this particular color.

IMG_3694

La Roche Posay Rosaliac UV Legere: This is a cream with niacinamide (also written as nicotinamide, this is a derivate of vitamin B3). It has SPF 15, so first I used it as a day cream. It is tinted green, but too little to actually have effect, it’s just a gimmick. Despite being the legere version (there’s a riche one also) I found this cream very thick. And sadly, it left me looking incredibly greasy. It’s not that I was greasy (aka full of my own sebum) but this cream is just so shiny in not a god way. It was impossible to apply makeup on top. So I started using this as a night cream. And you know, in the long term it really worked. Short term I’d often get red in the face when I applied it. But long term, my acne and rosacea symptoms got so much less. My skin is calmer and better overall. But, because I really don’t need a greasy night cream with SPF I will not repurchase. Instead I am looking for creams with similar ingredients. Sadly I had not taken a pic of them before I threw the packaging away, so I can’t show them to you. Sorry. Basically I am looking for something with niacinamide, no alcohol, no perfume.

IMG_3698

Then I used up a sample of YSL Paris EdT. This is originally from the 80s and you can tell. I has a lot of notes, but I am overwhelmed by the powdery rose. Very rosey, very powdery. It was nice to test, but I’m not going to miss it.

IMG_3700

Last item! I also used up the Kiko kiss balm. This is very pigmented, comparable to a sheer lipstick. The balm had a lot of slick, it glides on very quickly. It made my lips feel good and look lovely. I am not sure if it had any long term benefits. It does come with SPF 15, though, which is good. I would recommend it for those who don’t want to put on lipstick and are looking for a colored balm instead. It’s too slick and too pigmented to use underneath lipstick even if you wiped most of it off again.

Wow, this was a mega post. In case anyone besides me finished reading all that, you deserve a cookie. 🙂

Clinique Chubby Stick Baby Tint Poppin Poppy

Clinique Chubby Stick Baby Tint Poppin Poppy

Clinique Poppin

While everyone else is going crazy about the Clinique Pop Colors, I am behind and am writing about Clinique Chubby Sticks only now. I actually had a Chubby Stick Intense for a long time now and I use it frequently, yet it looks like I never made a post about it. Might do… sometime. Today, I have a Chubby Stick Baby Tint for you. Sadly, these were limited (I think) and are not part of the lineup anymore. I found it at a clearance sale, and you never know when you might come across one, so I’ll put up a review anyway. Sorry it’s not easy to get anymore.

The Chubby Stick Baby tint is described as a “moisturizing lip color balm”. It’s one of these react-with-your-ph sort of things, so it doesn’t give off color directly, but later on it leaves quite a stain on the skin.

Clinique Poppy swatch

Swatch: Clinique Chubby Stick Baby Tint 01 Poppin’ Poppy.

It is glossy and moisturizing. The color ends up a pinky coral, not as orange as the stick might have you believe. In fact, the color ends up identical to the Dior Color Reviver lip balm in Coral. Repeated application makes the color stronger. Eating makes the color stronger as well.

As usual, Clinique products are unperfumed, which does not mean they don’t have a smell. This one smells like all the Chubby Sticks, a sort of waxy smell.

When wearing this (and reapplying through the day) I don’t feel the need for a lip balm.

Since this is not easily available anymore, some similar products: Guerlain LPRN My first lipstick (strong scent), Dior Color Reviver balm, the Givenchy Rouge Interdit line always includes one of these, Kiko has one of these, too …Honestly this sort of formula is pretty the much the same everywhere, might only differ in the amount of added perfume and the shape of the balm.

So overall, this is a nice product, if you like these sort of stains, which I do, but not a horrible miss if you don’t have it.

Woman Day Haul

Woman Day Haul

Tody I have another little haul to show, my haul from the Woman Day Sale:

DSC01569

I picked up the new Moschino release, Fresh Couture EdT,  mostly because of the bottle. I’m not usually one to care about bottles, but this one is hilarious!

A makeup thing I really wanted: the Zoeva Rose Golden Palette. My first Zoeva makeup.

Then I stocked up on the MAC CC Cream. I mean if you’re gonna buy it anyway, you might as well do it when you can get it for 20% off. (In the last three years MAC has gotten more and more expensive here. I have my staples that I’ll keep buying but for the rest I’m checking out other brands now.)

I also got another Maybelline lipstick, the Color Sensational matte in 960 Red Sunset.

Then I bought two things that people keep raving about: the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk, as a base for colorful makeup, and an EOS lip balm. I picked Strawberry Sorbet, not because I prefer strawberry scent, but because this one came without the bad scent components (like Linalool, Geraniol etc). I’m trying to pay more attention to that now. The reason that I bought Eos at all is, well I needed a lip balm, but I picked Eos because I felt compelled to at least try it as a beauty blogger… “for science” so to say. 🙂

The last items are the freebies I got: Missoni‘s first perfume release, Missoni EdP, and the new Escada summer scent: Agua del Sol EdT.

Well I hope you guys like perfume reviews because I’m not going to run out of topics any time soon.

As usual, reviews will follow when I had the time to test the stuff.

Spring Makeup Haul

Spring Makeup Haul

I was super into easter colors lately and it sort of shows in my new purchases?

DSC01497

Maybe not so much with the packaging, but…

Spring Haul 2016

Getting there…

DSC01503

Spring! 😀

Okay, so what are the items?

On top you can see two brow products by Maybelline: the BrowSatin in medium brown and dark brown. They are double ended, one side a thin pencil, the other a sponge with powder.

On the upper left, a Clinique Chubby Stick Baby Tint: 01 Poppin’ Poppy. On the upper right: Maybelline Color Sensational Matte Magnetic Magenta.

The mascara duo is from Essence: the thinner wand is the Forbidden Volume False Lash Mascara Topcoat, the thicker wand is the Forbidden Volume Mascara Rebel. There’s another duo without the “rebel” in the name, but I thought I might as well go all out. I was actually about to buy the Princess Mascara, but the duo won for one single reason: they came packaged in plastic (shown in top pic). I have trouble buying normal drugstore stuff if it isn’t sealed because I’ve seen too many people use stuff (not the testers) and putting it back in the aisle. And since you can’t tell with mascara if it has been opened, I’m sticking to high end and those drugstore mascaras that come sealed.

The lower lipstick is Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Matte in Stronger, one of the most interesting colors in their whole lineup!

And lastly, the eyeshadow duo is Nars Fashion Rebel. I am well aware that a matte yellow will not have the best quality, but I just don’t care. I’m packing this stuff on! Spring! (Actually this is a past summer release, but it just screams spring to me right now.)

And this concludes my Spring haul. This is sort of a pre-woman day haul, I got lots of good discounts. This Thursday, for everyone who lives in and near Austria, don’t forget it’s Woman Day. 20% off on shoes, clothes, cosmetics. In my experience this week it will pay off to simply ask for a discount, even if it is not thursday and even if the shop is not officially on the list.

All Used Up September 2015

All Used Up September 2015

Another month has gone by already, and while I didn’t have much time to blog, I did produce quite a few empties. So let’s dive right into it:

IMG_2978

Dior BB Creme in 01: out of all BB Creams I tried this was my favorite. It is a tad pink for me (more NW than NC if we use MAC color scheme) but overall so good that I have already bought another one.

IMG_2973

Yves Rocher Monoi de Tahiti Shampoo Shower gel: This is the bright blue one that is both shower gel and shampoo. The monoi smell in this one has a note of bubblegum if you ask me. I found this to be a good shower gel but even more important, a very good shampoo. My hair was all silky and easy to comb. That makes this product a clear winner in my books and I will likely buy it again.

IMG_2974

List of ingredients. Click to enlarge.

IMG_2971

Two Chanel products: The Rouge Coco Shine in Chic that I already talked about in my Lipstick Tag post. This was a limited color, but I have received another one as a gift after talking about it on this blog. 🙂

The other one is my beloved Le Volume mascara in Khaki Bronze, another limited item. Like the name suggests the main draw is the volumising effect. There’s not much lengthening going on and the weight can make the lashes droop a little. But I don’t have a huge problem with my lashes losing their curl so it worked for me. The biggest plus of this mascara was the fact that there was no smudging and no crumbling. Even though it is not waterproof, this was my go-to sure thing mascara. The scond biggest draw was the color, it worked very well for my fair complexion and I wore it to pretty much every look with the exception of black liner looks. Very, very good and while this particular color is not available anymore, I will certainly buy another Le Volume in the future. I just have to use up a couple other mascaras first…

IMG_2952

Salvatore Ferragamo Signorina Eleganza Body Lotion: Eleganza is a flanker to the perfume Signorina and this was the matching body lotion. The smell is flowery and honestly sorta forgettable. The lotion was of good quality, though.

IMG_2930

Maybelline Baby Lips Cherry Me: a red lip balm. Tbh I didn’t expect the color to come out so strong, but this has about the same color pay off as a sheer lipstick when applied twice. The stain left is very strong, the shine wears off after a half an hour. I was on the fence about the nourishing quality of this balm. First I thought it wasn’t that good, weeks later I thought, no it’s quite good. Maybe it depends on the state of your lips. It doesn’t help with very flaky ones. For now I have enough lip balms and I’ll probably try something else rather than repurchasing this one.

So, this concludes my empties of last month. I’m not sure if I will use up anything in October. I have thrown some stuff out that I wasn’t going to finish when I was moving house, so now I have less stuff lying about, yay! (Mum, who helped me pack, in the background right now: “you have WAY too much stuff!” Pffft.)

All Used Up June 2015

All Used Up June 2015

Hello and welcome to my newest empties post. There are only a few items this month.

Rodial Glam Balm

First I used up the Rodial glam balm lip with SPF 15. This is a rose scented balm. I don’t like rose very much but I grew used to it. The balm itself is extremely good, very nourishing. I was all ready to complain about the amount of product in this review, because the full size only contains 7,5 ml in a tube that could easily hold 15 ml. BUT then this single tube lasted very long; I have used this almost everyday twice since last July. So I am left with no negative points except maybe the price (about 20 € I think – mine came in a beauty box so I don’t know for sure). Recommendation.

Lancome Advanced Genifique

Then I used up a full size of Lancome‘s Advanced Genifique serum. I already reviewed the samples here. After that I bought the full size of 50 ml. Only when I had the full size I noticed the ingredients list included alcohol. Damn, I really want to minimize alcohol in my skin care. But apart from that, it is so good. For now, I’ll use the samples that have collected in my drawer again and see if I find anything else I like. But I may buy Advanced Genifique again some time (if I get a good discount because wow this is expensive!).

I also like the packaging a lot, with the dropper and the fact that it’s black on top and becomes clear in the bottom. This is useful because you won’t run out unexpectedly. Also I felt like some evil fairy tale queen using this (and the results are quite magical, too). 😉

Used up1

Last two items: My sample of Guerlain L’Homme Ideal Cologne ran out. Sobsob. Review is here. I had this in my bag and used it on hot days.

And the other is Douglas XSmall Velvety Body Lotion. Douglas has this skin care range called XSXL. You can guess the sizes. 😉 The small ones are very useful travel sizes. This one is a very regular body lotion, I can’t say much about it, except the scent could be less strong.

Ingredients

Ingredient list of Body Lotion.

And that’s it, my empties of the last month! 😀

Most Used Makeup Items February & March 2015

Most Used Makeup Items February & March 2015

After finishing my series of seasonal favorites I thought I’d make a bimonthly series showing the items I reached for the most, excluding base products. Because even when I think a particular lipstick is my favorite, I find I’m not wearing it as often as others. So this is not a ‘favorites’ post, it’s a tally of ‘most reached for’. 🙂

DSC00292

And these are the makeup heroes of the last two months.

DSC00294

MAC Brow Set in Beguile: This has completely replaced my routine of brow powder and wax. Review upcoming; I was just so busy using it that it took me forever to take pics. From now on this counts as a base product staple!

Lipstick in front is L’Oreal Blake’s Red.

The powder in the back is MAC Powder Blush in Easy Manner. I use this so much and it’s not even dented!

The pencil is MAC Chromagraphic in Process Magenta. I’ve been using this as a lip liner for various bright pink lipsticks. I think it’s funny that a pink liner and a red lipstick made it into the list, but I used Blake without and with varying liners and I somehow never used the same pink lipstick…

The lipstick on top is actually a lip balm, Lancome Baume in Love A la folie, cherry. It goes on almost transparent and as such is very wearable.

Last one is a MAC Paintpot in the universal color Painterly. I used this sometimes as base underneath other shadows but often on its own for a bare look. I have two paintpots and I think I never talked about them before. Reason is that I never used them as they crease terribly. I’m always awed when people say, oh I use a paintpot as my makeup base, it holds forever. On me it holds about one hour. However, since I have the wonderful Primer Potion by Urban Decay (not pictured, because total base staple) now, the paintpots stay in place and almost don’t crease! Huzzah! So I went from never using Painterly to using it lots. Thank you, Urban Decay!

So these were the products I used the most the last two months. Do you keep track of what you use?

Winter Favorites

Winter Favorites

Better late than never, here’s what I love to wear in winter:

DSC00128

On top of the picture, that’s not a cat, it’s a cap knit by my mom; I got it for x-mas. Because chilly air is no good, so I almost always wear a knit hat. 🙂

On the far right I put a tube of hand cream. Regular reads will know I am a hand cream fiend and in winter I need more protection than usual. Next to it, my new Clarins lip oil. Any lip balm might have worked for this compilation, but it’s new and really good so it made the cut.

DSC00129

On to the makeup: these are what I wore most often when it was chilly and snowy. Underneath the lip oil, The YSL Palette City Drive Arty. The colors are pretty chilly if you ask me. I don’t use it often, but lately I was in the mood for chilly. The tube next to it is another YSL, the Dare to Glow Liquid Highlighter in Naughty Pink. It’s such a pity these were limited edition, it’s the best liquid highlighter I know.

On top there is the MAC powder blush in Easy Manner, sadly another LE item. It was part of a past Holiday Collection. I loved it in the store, took it home and at home… I could barely see it. I was disappointed and chucked it in the back of the makeup drawer. Much later I pulled it out again and it was magic! It gives a wonderful peachy pink flush, pinker than you’d expect from the pan. This story shows how important it is to have a good blush brush. In this case, one that isn’t too loose. Anyway, I think this is a perfect winter blush.

Next is Guerlain Terracotta Blush Sun Shimmer Highlighter in Sunny Pink. It’s a coral blush with lots of golden shimmer. I’m pretty sure Guerlain released this in the summer, but the time I need this most is winter. This is my patented recipe for gloomy days when the sun refuses to even rise and you’re stuck in cold and dark. Putting this on, instant light!

Next to it is a lip gloss by Isadora, the Express Star Gloss in Reflecting Peach. I’m not much of a gloss wearer, but in winter when it’s freezing and snowy I suddenly feel the need for sparkles, that’s when I reach for this one (or the one from Rouge Bunny Rouge, which goes very well with the Terracotta Blush).

Last item here is Max Factor Excess Shimmer in Crystal. I use it as base underneath the YSL palette, or on its own for a snow queen look.

Basically, in winter I am a fan of two things: lots and lots of shimmer and sparkles, and pastels. That’s why I am glad that Spring Collections come out in January. By the time real spring rolls around, I’m already in the mood for stronger colors. I guess what I showed you up there is the shimmer edition. Please note I’m not wearing all of this at the same time, that’d look a little weird. I was mostly reaching for these when there was snow on the ground. Except for the MAC blush – I wear it whenever, all through the season.

This time I added no nail polish since I’d already shown you my color picks in a previous post. As for perfume, I forgot to add one. Something cozy like Eau de Shalimar maybe, although I also wore ‘cold’ perfumes a lot, like Eau de Gaga or Chanel N°5 Eau Premiere.

What are your picks for chilly weather? Dark and moody, or shimmery and light?

Not Used Up: Makeup Spring Cleaning 2015

Not Used Up: Makeup Spring Cleaning 2015

I had exactly zero empties last month. Last time that happened I chucked out some stuff that had gone bad or that I just wasn’t going to use anymore, so I’ll do the same this time around, only concentrating on makeup (last time was mostly skin care). Here’s the makeup that has either gone bad or that I simply won’t use anymore:

And another shot:

DSC00135

So we’ve got two eyeshadow duos, one from Nivea and one from Astor, both with barely any color payoff; a taupe cream eyeshadow from Maybelline that was always too dry to apply; three pale lipsticks, all of them with strong frost shimmer (shudder), from s-he, L’Oreal and Astor; an even paler and even frostier lip balm from Balea; and a green concealer from alverde that never worked because it kept sliding off when I put foundation on top. Phew.

Sorry, guys, but it’s just not working between us. Bye, bye.

Little Basics Haul

Little Basics Haul

DSC00096

Today I have a little haul to share, three basic items:

1. MAC Mineralize Compact Foundation: this was my foundation discovery of 2014. I used it so much that I already hit pan on my first one. It’s nowhere near empty, but I bought a back up anyway.

2. MAC Prep + Prime Lip: So far I used either nothing or lip balm underneath a lipstick, but at the moment most of my balms are colored and I thought I’d try a proper primer.

3. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion: My MAC eye primer didn’t really work for me and as Urban Decay is now available in Austria I picked it up. So far I’m happy with it.

And that was the haul. Sorta unglamorous, but helpful basics. Which are your must-have basics?

Clarins Spring 2015: Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil

Clarins Spring 2015: Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil

The newest trend in cosmetics is tinted lip oils. Clarins and YSL offer them in their spring collections and I decided I needed at least one:

DSC00097

My choice fell to the Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil | Eclat Minute Huile Comfort Levres in 01 Honey. Clarins offers two colors: honey and raspberry; they have matching scents. Honey will be permanent, raspberry is LE! But I decided that I have enough balms and lipsticks in raspberry hues and the smell of honey was so lovely.

DSC00098

Packagingwise, the lip oils are almost identical to the Instant Light blushes which were a limited edition a few springs ago. Only the cap is slightly different, but the applicator is the same.

DSC00099

It’s an unusually big applicator for lips, but it worked for me. I put it to the middle of my lower lip to deposit product and then spread around by pressing my lips together. While it’s called an oil, it is much closer to lip gloss. In fact you use it exactly like lip gloss, it can be applied on the naked lips or on top of lipstick.

DSC00101

Swatch. The yellow oil obviously doesn’t have much color and if it left a light yellow stain you wouldn’t notice it. On the lips it looks like a clear gloss. It also wears like a gloss. Lasting power is about two to three hours unless you eat or drink. But when the gloss has worn off, the lips are still being nourished. I guess the oils have sunk into the skin. To keep my lips soft I need to reapply maybe twice a day, if even.

I wore it for two days and it has healed my badly cracked lips in that time. It is cold here and I was ill and my lips were bleeding. But now they’re all all soft and I haven’t even worn it today. The only bad thing about this lip oil is that it hasn’t been released sooner! Where have you been all my life!!! Massive recommendation. Much better than any balm I own.

kiko kiss balm Raspberry

kiko kiss balm Raspberry

IMG_2536

I am still sick with a cold, better than before, but this is my third try writing a post on the kiko kiss balm. Alright so this is a balm, not a balmy lipstick. You’ll find it with kiko’s other skin care, not with the makeup. There are several colored balms in a fruity theme with the packaging reflecting the color of the balm itself. I chose 05 Raspberry, because I thought a mid-tone pink would be a good color for a balm. The balms come with SPF 15.

IMG_2537

The packaging is of high quality in my opinion. This could be a high end lipstick.

IMG_2539

Swatch. The balm goes on super creamy and gives off more color than I expected. It does not create any sort of stain, though. (Actually, when I reapply during the day there might be a pink stain left after all?)

On my lips I first noticed the smell/taste of fake candy raspberry. Brrr. Had I noticed that in the store, where I only swatched it on my arm, I wouldn’t have bought it. If you like fake candy scents, these are for you, obviously every color will have a different one.

Despite the good swatch up there, on my lips it’s basically invisible. I don’t think it’s a lack of pigmentation, but it’s pretty much my natural lip color and the balm isn’t really opaque. I have now delegated this to be my at home balm. Wear time is not good, but again it’s not meant to be a lipstick. It’ll last only an hour, maximum two, then I need to reapply. The moisturization is okay I think. My lips are simply super chapped because of my cold right now.

All in all, a nice product. Had I known how it would be on my lips I might have either chosen a lighter color for a completely invisible balm or a darker one. In fact, my mum has this in a different shade and likes it a lot, I might have to snoop around which one she has.

All Used Up in June ’14

All Used Up in June ’14

IMG_1991

My first empty bottle in June was the BC Bonacure Oil Miracle Volume Amplifier. Like, it ran out on June, 1st, just a day too late for my previous empties post. 😐 I’m still not sure what this thing actually is, it comes out as a golden conditioner-like cream, but it’s a leave in product. It contains argan oil and no silicones. It was very useful, since it was sort of conditioning the hair and giving a little volume as well and being a leave in product, it’s faster than something you have to wash out. I liked it and might buy a full size.

IMG_1990

Diadermine Lift+ Hautverschönderndes Multi-Zonen Öl: This was a body oil in a spray bottle. At first I was super into it, it leaves the skin very soft. After a while it started to annoy me – the spray isn’t very directional and the oil ends up all over the place, including eyes and airways. 😦 Even when I put my hand right in front of the bottle, some of the oil ended up somewhere else. My mum also claims that the smell is terrible. Personally, I found the scent okay. But I wouldn’t buy another full size.

IMG_2021

Clarins Creme Eclat du Jour/Daily Energizer Cream: I also have the matching facewash. The Daily Energizer line has a very lovely scent. This particular cream is very rich, I would only recommend it for dry skin. It moisturizes well, but I did not notice anything else. It’s a completely regular face cream, apart from the nice smell you can get something similar for less money.

IMG_2020

Figs & Rouge Multi-Purpose Lip Balm Coco Rose: This was good. This was very good. I used it every day and it kept my lips soft and whole. The balm comes out a soft glossy pink with sparkle. This was pretty much the reason I did not use any lip gloss the last year. I’d just use this instead. I 100% recommend this, I only wish it had some sort of applicator or a better opening, because it comes out of the tube in a wide opening and I had to use my finger to apply.

IMG_2017

Judith Williams Phytomineral Handcream: This a very rich hand cream with a thick texture in a bottle with a very small opening. Getting anything out is quite the muscle training. It was very good for my skin though. Operating touch screens is not possible after application, it needs a while to sink in.

IMG_2089

Another Clarins, this time the Ultra Matte Rebalacing Lotion for oily skin: This is a lightweight mattifying cream. Despite being for oily skin, it did not feel drying on my cheeks. It’s the perfect summer face cream. It does mattify the skin, but if I used nothing else my nose would get shiny halfway through the day. There is also a version for combination skin, but since the version for oily skin has worked so well for me, I’d stick with it.

IMG_2104

Daylong ultra sunscreen with SPF 25: I had several mini sizes and samples of this one. It goes on very lightweight and sinks into the skin fast. There is no greasy feeling afterwards. I could detect no scent, but the dog could (and kept on trying to lick it off). It comes out of the bottle yellow and while it hasn’t happened to me, it’s possible for this to stain clothes. Overall, it is a good product, but SPF 25 is too low for me. I also had one sample of the SPF 50 version for kids. That one has physical filters only (as kids sun screen always should) meaning that unlike the SPF 25, the 50 left a visible white cast on the skin. The texture of the SPF 50 was also harder to work in.

All in all, I would buy neither the SPF 25 nor the kids one, but I might check out their SPF 30 sunscreens sometime.

These were my June empties, if you made it down here, you get a virtual cupcake. 🙂

Not used up

Not used up

I did not have any empties in April, but I did spring cleaning, so let me show you products I used, but then chucked away half full.

IMG_1865

alverde Blond Conditioner Hopfenblüte Honig: I liked this conditioner, it made hair super soft and easy to brush. But I used it only occassionally (would make hair limp if used too often) and I’ve had it forever and a day and it smelled funky when I found it in the back of the cabinet. So it had to go, but it was not a bad product at all.

Kanebo Sensai Prime Solution: This was supposed to be an additional step in moisturizing, used before any other products to make them work better. I had suspicions it broke me out. It probably didn’t, but it didn’t have any positive effects either. Usually I would let it lie for a few months and then try again. However, the product is impossible to get out. This thing has no pump, and it’s made from several layers of hard plastic, making it impossible to squeeze even a tiny bit. If it was liquid enough to come out on its own, that would be okay. But it was such a hassle getting even the slightest bit of product out, that I decided to give up.

IMG_1502

bebe more Fresh Eyes & Face make up remover: it does remove eye make up very well and did not burn inside of my eye. However, it burned on my skin and made it very red. The next day, my skin would be very dry and peel off. This thing is supposed to be for sensitive skin. I beg to differ. I stopped using and chucked it away because I was afraid it would ruin my skin. It took me two weeks of using to come to this decision. I was very determined to like it, and it does remove make up well. But no, wasn’t worth it.

007

bebe more brighten up: possibly the worst skin cream I have used, ever. It gives pretty much no moisture at all. It is also highly reflective and not in the good way. It makes you look oily even if your skin is dry. So in my eyes, this makes it unsuitable for any skin type.

010

The Body Shop 100% natural lip roll on: Tastes sweet. Does not do anything else at all. Gives no moisture or protection. My lips cracked a lot and so I threw it out.

IMG_1866

alverde liquid rouge: started to smell funky. That’s always a chance with liquid makeup, sadly.

Both alverde products were long past their ‘best before’ dates.

The only reason the great majority of Glossybox hair stuff isn’t on there is that I didn’t even open them. I only list things I really tried to use up but couldn’t. By the way, I have unsubscribed from Glossybox for now. I have a backlog to go through and their quality isn’t what it used to be. I might get weak with the one time boxes, though.

More Astor Lip Butters

More Astor Lip Butters

The number of my Astor Lipcolor Butters has grown to three, so I’d like to make a little swatch post.

IMG_1696

The colors top to bottom: 010 Pink Lady, 012 Unguilty Pleasure, 020 Flirt Natural

The last one belongs to the new shades, which are called “Ultra Vibrant Color” instead of “Color + Balm + Shine” which is the tag line of the old ones. After playing with them for weeks I say there is no difference between the new and the original type. The only difference is that the new ones come with matching nail polish, which I didn’t buy.

IMG_1701

Color swatches. I was about to type that the last one (Flirt Natural) pulls a little too brown, but I held the butter right next to the pic and it’s 100% true to color. Flirt Natural is almost a perfect nude on my lips. It might just look a little weird here on my freakishly pale arm.

They are all pigmented (for a balm), moisturizing and with a glossy finish. Lasting power is good (again, for a balm), does not survive a meal.

When I did my first post on these, I got asked how they compare to a Clinique Chubby Stick. The answer is not at all. I am aware they did this type of lip product first, but by now they exist in pretty mch every brand and they are often as different as BB Creams are across brands. Personally, I do not like Clinique Chuby Sticks very much. The originals are not pigmented enough and the Intense ones are drying on my lips. So the reason why I latched onto these Astor ones is that they are NOT like Chubby Sticks (as opposed to a cheap dupe of them).

I am tempted to try the Catrice sticks as well, but I am trying to put myself on a “lippies” ban. So much lipstick, so little time!

(Sometime in the near future I have several Foundation reviews to make. I am still testing through options at the moment. As it is going I might just not buy a new foundation at all and stick with my beloved Diorskin Nude BB Creme. Some of the foundations I’ll be reviewing: YSL Touche Eclat, Giorgio Armani Maestro, Clarins Teint Haute Tenue)
