Chanel Illusion d’Ombre in Ebloui vs Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow in Velvet Plum

Chanel Illusion d’Ombre in Ebloui vs Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow in Velvet Plum

Please excuse the overly long title here. Somehow I got the impression that those two were similar and I wanted to compare them:

Top: Chanel Illusion d’Ombre in 88 Ebloui

Bottom: Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow in 37 Velvet Plum

You can see the unwiped part of the Chanel cream looks a lot darker, but the part that is already touched is a bit similar to the Bobbi Brown cream. You can also see the size difference of the pots. Chanel contains 4 g, Bobbi Brown comes with 3,5 g.

Swatch time. Again, top is Chanel, bottom is Bobbi Brown. They are somewhat similar, but put next to each other, Velvet Plum looks a lot more brown, while Chanel leans more raspberry. Ebloui is certainly more reddish, with multicolored shimmer. Velvet Plum has mostly golden shimmer, but not only.

This swatch was made in the shade. All my sunlight swatches were unusable, sadly. But in sunlight you can see that Ebloui has much stronger shimmer than Velvet Plum, despite what it looks like in the pots.

Usability: Both can be easily applied with fingers; you can use brushes of course if you prefer. Both spread out and blend like a charm.

Longevity: I almost did not make this post, because I think it is unfair to compare anything to the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow in Velvet Plum. It is the best cream product I have ever used, it is amazing because despite being a darker color, I can detect no creasing even after 12 hours*. Usually I get lots of creasing on my lids.  The Chanel Illusion d’Ombre in Ebloui started to wear off around the four hour mark and creased some. It still looked great because I was going for a grungy look anyway and Ebloui does “lived-in” very well. But it can in no way compare to the wonder that is Velvet Plum.

Both have been tested without base or any powder shadow on top.

The verdict: I love both, for different looks.

*This goes for Velvet Plum only. Other Bobbi Brown shadows do crease, more or less, depending on color. Usually less, though.

  1. I love both Bobbi Brown cream eyeshadows and Chanel Illusion D’Ombre. I agree Bobbi Brown wear longer but i just love the way the Chanel ones look on my eyes. I always get compliments whenever i wear them and i use NARS smudge proof eye base and they don’t wear off or crease over eight hours.wear. I wear Bobbi Brown ones when i want to play down my look a bit.
